Joe Kelly is a highly sought-after strategic advisor to C-suite executives and boards of some of the world’s most complex oil and gas, telecommunications, aerospace and defense, and financial services companies. An executive leader with a unique set of professional experiences, Joe’s expertise spans a number of critical disciplines including digital and talent strategic transformation, mergers and acquisitions, Board and executive compensation design and valuation/actuarial modeling. He is qualified to serve on Audit Committees as a financial expert.
After starting his career as an actuary, Joe joined Deloitte where he spent the next 30+ years building a reputation as a capable leader and trusted advisor to his clients and his partners alike. Joe was instrumental in building Deloitte’s human capital M&A capabilities into a $100M business, and has personally advised private equity and strategic buyers in all stages of the M&A lifecycle from due diligence and valuation through post-merger integration. His PE clients have included many of the most significant buyers in the market. As a client leader, Joe was responsible for the delivery of over $100M annually of global services to the largest U.S. supermajor oil and gas company. Joe is truly a global leader having spent significant time in China, India, Singapore, Belgium, Canada, Mexico, and many other countries around the world.
Joe’s ability to face difficult challenges in a direct yet collaborative manner created many opportunities for governance and leadership roles at the highest levels of the firm. He chaired the Nominating Committee during a particularly challenging time for board and executive transition, securing his reputation as a leader with a knack for building consensus among parties when the stakes are high. He also served on the firm’s Elected Leader Succession Committee.
After playing a critical leadership role in the reintegration of Deloitte Consulting following a cancelled spin-off, Joe helped to reimagine the operating and talent models of the practice. He had operational responsibility for two underperforming human capital businesses, rebuilding and strategically realigning each to become thriving businesses with $165M and $200M in revenues respectively. At one time, he was also responsible for recruitment, professional development and conflict resolution for Deloitte’s 1,200+ partner consulting practice. He also led the firm’s cross-functional Energy and Resources Industry sector during a period of record growth to become a $400M practice.
Joe has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to his community and his profession. He is a member of the Board and has served on the executive, succession and compensation committees of Junior Achievement of Southeast Texas. He was the Chairman of The Actuarial Foundation, also serving on multiple Board committees and task forces. Joe also served on the Board of SpringSpririt Baseball, a Houston-based nonprofit that provides safe pathways for youth to realize life opportunities through sports, education and mentoring programs.
Joe received bachelor’s degrees in Actuarial Science and Accounting from Drake University. He is an Associate in the Society of Actuaries, an Enrolled Actuary, a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and a Fellow in the Conference of Consulting Actuaries.
